'Man without a face' to present dangers of spit tobacco

Nationally recognized speaker Rick Bender, who some call the man without a face, will speak to Central Louisiana youth and adults about the dangers of using spit tobacco from Oct. 11-21 in a series of presentations funded by The Rapides Foundation called “Giving People Something Else to Chew On.”

Bender knows all too well the dangers of using spit tobacco. After using spit tobacco since he was 12 years old, he was diagnosed at 26 with cancer caused by his tobacco use. Four major surgeries later, 48-year-old Bender is now missing one-third of his tongue, half of his jaw and some use of his right arm.

Kids, adults urged to turn off screens Sept. 20-26

The more time that people, especially children, spend in front of TVs and computers the less active and unhealthier they become. It’s a simple but challenging fact, one that The Rapides Foundation is committed to changing, one week at a time.

Through grants funded by the Foundation, Central Louisiana organizations, communities and schools are stepping away from screens for one week and sponsoring healthy activities for adults and children.

Foundation program offers free cancer checkups in Allen Parish Sept. 7-8

The Cenla Medication Access Program’s cancer screening van will visit Allen Parish in September to help residents get checked for colorectal, breast and cervical cancers. The van will be at CMAP’s Oakdale office, 107 South 12th St., from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 7, and from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 8.

'Wood Works' Welcomes New Class

A high school program that prepares students for careers in the forest products industry began its fourth year with welcome orientations on Wednesday, Aug. 25. Due to the large number of students enrolled in the program this year, there were two orientation sessions: one at 9:30 a.m. for Allen Parish schools and one at 11 a.m. for Grant, Rapides and Vernon parish schools. Both events were at the RoyOMartin corporate offices in Alexandria.

The summit was for business and civic leaders throughout the region. It was designed to create an ongoing conversation on Central Louisiana’s future, particularly on the economic challenges and opportunities faced by the region.

Campaign emphasizes real victims of tobacco

A woman with smoking-related lung disease fears for her life. A young boy longs for the company of his grandpa. A man who lost most of his jaw to throat cancer knows he has to live this way for the rest of his life.

These are just a few of the people to be featured in The Rapides Foundation’s “Faces of Tobacco,” a new campaign that highlights real people who have been affected by tobacco use. The campaign, which runs from February through November, is designed to demonstrate the far-reaching effects of tobacco use.
